EmpowerU: Success Story

The Upstate Workforce Board and SC Works Greater Upstate has partnered with the South Carolina Department of Juvenile Justice (DJJ) to implement a new strategy for working with at risk youth.  EmpowerU is a project that provides a structured career exploration program for DJJ participants by using virtual reality technology to support career exploration. The program also includes classroom instruction on a variety of topics.

One of the most successful students from cohort 2, Alexander initially lacked motivation for the program and was easily distracted. To better engage him and others, SC Works Facilitator, LaToya Council, decided to involve the students more in class activities. They discussed topics they found interesting, such as budgeting and life after release. Additionally, they collaborated on graduation plans and meal preferences. By integrating these preferences into the daily routine, Ms. Council observed increased participation from Alexander and the entire class. Consequently, Alexander attended every class session successfully and quickly became one of the most engaged students in the group. He developed a plan for his post-release future, aiming to join the military after graduating from high school, with support from a career counselor at the Evaluation Center who connected him with a recruiter. His parents attended the graduation ceremony, celebrating his achievement in completing the EmpowerU program—a proud moment for us all. He is enthusiastic about what lies ahead.
